The INRS details these prevention principles as follows:

1. Avoiding risks : The first step is to identify and eliminate potential hazards in the workplace. This may involve modifying processes or eliminating hazardous substances.
2. Assessing risks : This means assessing exposure to the hazard and the extent of the risk, in order to prioritize the preventive measures to be taken. For risks that cannot be totally eliminated, it is crucial to assess their nature and importance in order to implement appropriate preventive measures.
3. Combating risks at source : Prevention must be integrated as far upstream as possible, right from the design stage of workplaces, equipment and operating procedures.
4. Adapting work to people: This principle aims to design workstations and choose equipment taking into account individual differences, in order to reduce the effects of work on health.
5. Keep abreast of technical developments: Prevention must adapt to technological and organizational changes.
6. Replace what is dangerous with what is less so: Whenever possible, less hazardous processes or products should be used to achieve the same result.
7. Prevention planning : Prevention needs to be thought through holistically, integrating technology, work organization, working conditions, social relations and the environment.
8. Give priority to collective protection measures: Personal protective equipment should only be used in conjunction with collective protection if the latter proves inadequate.
9. Give appropriate instructions to workers: It means training and informing employees so that they are aware of the risks and preventive measures.
