GLOSSARY

on immersive learning

With new technologies on the rise, it's important to clarify the vocabulary of immersive learning. Also known as immersive learning, this is an educational approach using advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and other digital environments to enhance learning.

The Irwino team has decided to put a glossary online. to familiarize yourself with the world of immersive learning.

Why a glossary?

Irwino is known for its training solutions innovative virtual reality and it can be difficult to master all the vocabulary of theimmersive learningour glossary aims to :

- Clarifying obscure terms
- Deepen your understanding of immersive learning
- Enrich your own vocabulary

Here is a glossary of terms related to theimmersive learning :

A

🧠 Memory anchoring

Memory anchoring is the process by which new information is associated with existing knowledge or experience, thus facilitating its lasting memorization. Immersive learning, by simulating realistic situations, encourages memory anchoring.

🧑🏽‍🎓 Immersive learning

A learning method that uses technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create interactive environments where learners can simulate real-life situations and develop practical skills.

🔓 Autonomous (in reference to the VR headset)

A stand-alone VR headset works without being connected to a computer or console, giving the user total freedom of movement.

C

🥽 VR headset

A head-mounted device that immerses the user in a virtual reality environment by displaying stereoscopic images in front of the eyes.

✅ Credibility

While realism is important, the credibility of the simulation is sometimes more crucial. It's all about designing environments and elements that are sufficiently evocative for the learner to easily transpose them into reality.

D

💻 Digital learning

A learning method that uses digital technologies to deliver training, often in an interactive and engaging way.

E

🧑🏻‍💻 E-learning

Online learning using the Internet to access courses, training and educational resources. Enables learners to follow distance learning courses, at their own pace, via digital platforms.

🎭 Multisensory engagement

Immersive learning stimulates several senses (sight, hearing, touch) to create an immersive learning experience and promote memorization.

🌐 Virtual environment

A 3D digital space in which the user can move and interact, usually via a virtual reality headset.

🦺 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Equipment used to protect an individual against occupational hazards. In the context of VR training, this equipment can be virtually simulated.

🧯 Virtualized fire extinguishers

Digital representations of fire extinguishers in a virtual reality environment, enabling learners to practice their use without risk.

F

🌊 Flow

Flow, or "state of grace", is a mental state in which the learner is totally absorbed by the activity, focused and satisfied with his or her achievements. Immersive learning aims to induce this state to optimize learning.

🌎 Distance learning

A teaching method in which the learner and trainer are not physically present in the same place, often using digital technologies.

🕶️ Virtual reality training

Learning method using virtual reality technology to immerse learners in simulated environments for training purposes.

🎮 Playful training

A pedagogical approach that integrates elements of play into learning to make it more engaging and motivating.

I

📹 Immersive

Qualifies an experience that immerses the user in a virtual environment, creating a sensation of real presence.

🚀 Immersive learning

Immersive learning is an innovative teaching approach that immerses learners in realistic virtual environments simulating real-world situations. The aim is to enable learners to acquire and apply practical skills effectively.

🔄 Interactivity

A system's ability to enable a two-way exchange with the user, promoting active and engaging learning.

M

🕹️ VR Controllers

Hand-held control devices enabling the user to interact with the virtual environment.

💪🏼 Muscle memory

Muscle memory refers to the body's ability to memorize and reproduce learned movements and gestures. In immersive learning, simulations enable learners to practice technical movements and develop their muscle memory.

👓 Meta Quest 2 / Meta Quest 3

Stand-alone virtual reality headsets developed by Meta (formerly Facebook), widely used for VR training applications.

👀 Virtual setting

Learning scenario in a virtual environment that simulates a real-life situation, enabling the learner to practice skills in complete safety.

📚 VR training modules

Learning units designed specifically to be delivered via virtual reality, covering a variety of subjects and skills.

O

📚 Teaching tools

Pedagogical tools are educational resources that facilitate learning by providing interactive support adapted to the needs of learners through digital devices, educational software and visual aids.

P

👤 Presence

Presence describes the feeling of actually being "present" in the immersive virtual environment. The greater the sense of presence, the more effective the learning experience.

R

📱 Augmented reality (AR)

Augmented reality superimposes virtual elements (images, sounds, data) onto the real world perceived by the user. It thus enriches the existing physical environment with contextual digital information.

📲 Mixed reality (MR)

Mixed reality combines virtual and augmented reality, seamlessly merging digital objects with the real environment, enabling interaction between the two worlds.

🛸 Virtual reality (VR)

Virtual reality completely immerses the user in a computer-generated 3D digital environment. Thanks to a virtual reality headset, the user is immersed in a simulated virtual world and can interact with the elements of this environment.

⏱️ Immediate feedback

Immersive environments offer real-time feedback on learners' actions, enabling them to adjust their strategies and monitor their progress.

S

📝 Training scenarios

Pre-defined learning situations in which learners are placed to practice specific skills.

👾 Serious game

A serious game is an educational or training video game that combines entertainment and learning to achieve serious objectives in a variety of fields.

🖥️ Simulator

Device or software that reproduces the behavior of a real system for training or analysis purposes.

🌐 3D simulation

3D simulations are digital tools that use three-dimensional images to recreate real or theoretical situations.

🔥 Fire simulation

Virtual reality training scenario that simulates a fire, allowing learners to practice safety and fire extinguishing procedures.

🚑 First aid simulation

Virtual reality training scenario that simulates medical emergency situations, enabling learners to practice first aid techniques.

🎬 Realistic simulation

Immersive environments are based on realistic simulations reproducing authentic scenarios. Learners can experience real-life situations in complete safety, and learn from their mistakes.

🎓 Immersive Solution

The immersive solution is an immersive technology that immerses a user in an interactive digital environment. It enables the creation of interactive and engaging learning experiences through devices such as VR headsets and augmented reality systems.

🆘 SST (Sauveteur Secouriste du Travail)

Training that prepares employees to respond to workplace accidents. VR can be used to simulate emergency scenarios in this training.

V

📽️ 360° video

Video technology that captures a full spherical view, allowing the user to look in all directions.

🎦 VR360

VR360 (or 360° video) makes it possible to film real environments at 360 degrees and view them with a virtual reality headset, offering total immersion in these spaces.

W

⚙️ WebVR

WebVR refers to all web technologies enabling access to virtual reality experiences directly from a browser, without the need to install dedicated applications.
