3D virtual reality (VR or VR3D), the vidéo 360 immersive (VR360)the réalité increaseée (AR) and the réalité mixed (XR) are new terms that are often difficult to understand. The vidéo 360 and réalité virtual 3D in real timeéel are two technologies that offeréimmersive experiences inéfor users.

Although these terms are often usedés de manièinterchangeable, they areéalité très différents. In this article, we'll look at the differences and similarities between these two solutions, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

3D virtual reality is a technology that is often considered recent, but its foundations date back to the middle of the 20th century. In 2016, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets (also used in our training modules) introduced the current form of this technology and set standards for manufacturers and developers.

It allows the user to be totally immersed, with imagination and character as the only limits.étechnical specifications of the VR devices usedés. It is often associatedée à gamification, with numerous "serious game" type applications to réto addresséof the company's business processesère playful, active and immersive.

History of VR headsets

Since the 1960s, virtual reality (VR) was a fascinating idea in technology circles. It wasn't until the 1990s that the first consumer VR headsets came onto the market. However, these early headsets were often bulky, expensive and offered mediocre image quality.

SENSORAMA, first virtual reality machine (1956)
It combined several technologies to stimulate the senses of those using it: 3D color video, audio, vibrations, smell and atmospheric effects (e.g. wind).

VIRTUAL BOY, by NINTENDO (1995)
This was the first true VR headset. It created immersion with stereoscopic image diffusion, but failed to find its audience.

OCULUS RIFT, by Palmer Luckey (2012) An 18-year-old entrepreneur, theève raised $2.4 million on Kickstarter to createéer OCULUS RIFTr helmetéalité that enables renewal and development.émocratization of technology. In 2014 Facebook boughtète OCULUS for $2 billion.

Numerous headsets were then created by SONY, HTC, SAMSUNG, MICROSOFT ...

Over the years, VR technology has improved, thanks in particular to advances in display, processing power and connectivity. Today's VR headsets are much lighter, more comfortable and offer far superior image quality.

Advantages and disadvantages

We will now take a look at howère généWhat are the advantages and disadvantages ofénents of this technology

It is important to note that these advantages and disadvantages are not mutually exclusive.énents may vary depending on the manière whose solution is usedée and spécifiques impliquées.

What is vidéo 360° ?

360° video is a technique that allows you to capture a scene from all angles using a special camera capable of capturing a complete spherical image. For an even more realistic rendering, it is possible to use several cameras and assemble the images using a dedicated video editing tool.

However, for the full immersive experience, it's best to view the video through a VR headset. Although 360° video is more realistic, it is less interactive than 3D VR because it is not digitally designed. That's why it's particularly suited to virtual tour experiences, live events, virtual travel and product visualization.

Nevertheless, it is possible to incorporate virtual elements or visual interfaces, as in augmented reality, to make the experience even more immersive and add a touch of interaction to the video.

Understanding the differences between 3D virtual reality and 360° video

3D virtual reality and 360° video are two immersive technologies that are similar yet different in terms of production, use and distribution.

3D virtual reality uses CGI computer-generated 3D images, while 360° video is an assembly of real images captured by cameras. Creating a VR experience is similar to creating a video game, while producing a video involves a director, actors and technical teams.

3D virtual reality offers far more interaction than 360° viewing. By wearing a virtual reality headset and using dedicated controllers, you can move around in space and interact with virtual elements.

On the other hand, the 360-degree experience is more contemplative and offers limited interaction, generally through gaze interaction or via the controls of the video player or VR headset.

However, it is possible to combine the two formats, for example, by creating a 3D animated film in VR360 format, adding real images to a 3D virtual reality experience, or integrating 2D/3D interfaces and visuals into videos. It is therefore important to determine the objectives of each project before choosing which technology to use.

Vidéo 360° vs réalité 3D virtualization: when to use each technology?

360° video is particularly well-suited to creating an immersive experience for the viewer, especially in the field of realistic decision-making training (risks, best practices, organization...).

This technology is ideal for visualizing real environments in 360 degrees, making it perfect for virtual tours of tourist attractions, hotels, museums and so on. It is also used for live events, such as concerts or sporting events, but also for product presentations, as Apple did with its iPhone 14 in 360 degrees.

At our SST VR training module(first aid at work) where trainees are immersed in an environment and have to make decisions based on the situation they find themselves in.

La 3D virtual reality is very suitable for creating virtual training environmentsThis technology is also widely used in video games, films and virtual reality applications, where viewers can interact with their environment. This technology is also widely used for serious gaming, virtual workspaces, but also in architecture. As part of our FIRE VR fire training moduleFor example, we immerse trainees in a fire simulation where they have to interact with their environment to resolve this dangerous situation as effectively as possible. using virtualized fire extinguishers, specially designed from our FabLab.

How to choose between v360 and the 3D virtual reality?

Depending on your objectives, you'll need to choose the technology best suited to your project. If you want to visualize real environments in 360 degrees, 360 video is the ideal solution. If you want to create virtual environments or 3D objects, 3D virtual reality is the best option. But if your objectives call for an immersive experience combining both technologies, it's entirely possible to incorporate both for a better experience.
